Psychologists are highly trained professionals who hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology. They have extensive graduate education, which typically involves 5-7 years beyond a bachelor's degree, as well as specialized training during an internship and residency. This training gives them deep expertise in diagnosing and understanding how the mind works, as well as how different mental health conditions develop and can be treated.
Therapist, on the other hand, is a broader term that includes professionals like social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists (LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCs). Therapists typically have a master's degree and may specialize in providing talk therapy to help clients with mental health challenges. They offer coping strategies and support but may not be qualified to conduct psychological assessments or diagnose mental health disorders in the same way psychologists can.

Because psychologists have completed a lengthy and rigorous educational journey, their fees are often higher than those of other types of therapists. The advanced training and expertise psychologists bring to their work—including their ability to diagnose complex mental health conditions, conduct in-depth assessments, and understand the origins of problematic dynamics—are factors that contribute to this higher cost. Essentially, cost is correlated to psychologists’ expertise in “going beyond the problem” to create lifelong changes.
